Oak Gothic chest – 17ᵗʰ century – North of France

This chest is an excellent example of the last period of the Gothic style: Flamboyant Gothic. Its special feature is its set of five panels with “blind windows”, reminding you of stained glass windows in cathedrals; they are separated by small carved columns representing pilasters and stand on a thick moulded base.
Extensive repair work was required on the top.

  • On the front side, the five panels with “blind windows” are divided like stained glass
    windows in cathedrals.
  • The little columns are decorated with diamond-shaped, followed by “coups d’ongles”
    designs
  • The side panels are pleated.
  • The keyhole is embellished with three little half-columns.
  • The one in the middle conceals the keyhole.

Dimensions: width – 169 cm; height – 83 cm; depth – 59 cm.
