Elm wedding chest – 18ᵗʰ century – Cantal

This elm chest carries within it all the wishes of happiness addressed to the newlyweds for whom it was imagined and created in the 18ᵗʰ century:

  • The keyhole is heart shaped.
  • The carved flowers symbolize passion and fertility.
  • The spike-shaped motifs on either side of the facade evoke the stained glass windows of a chapel, perhaps local.

This unique piece of furniture reflects the talent and the delicate and sentimental approach of the peasant carpenter who lived for a time with these newlyweds and their families. Indeed, in the 18ᵗʰ century, furniture carpenters were itinerant. They would stay on the farm while they were doing the commissioned work. This is undoubtedly what enabled this artist to translate in a personal and intuitive way the traditional marriage wishes for happiness, by adapting to his taste the Louis XV style then in force at the Court.
