Statufied and adorned with an emerald scarf, its gentle belly fears no ravages of time. On the contrary, it enhances it, turning this Charente pottery into a star jar, or dare I say, an authentic oil of the upscale districts.

Petrified Oil Jar – 19th Century – Saintonge / Charente – [PA077]

This oil jar, crafted in Saintonge during the 19th century, has acquired a patina over time, now displaying a stone-toned patina, mixed with a verdant moss at the historical location of its protective “bavette” against thick walnut oil spills, which was used for domestic and municipal lighting back then.

It appears as if petrified in its stone-colored attire, where the moss seems to have initiated its gradual progression. In reality, this textural effect results from the natural wear of its off-white glaze, applied to raw clay. Originally, this glaze covered the body and handles of this astonishing oil jar, turned at a pottery center in Saintonge, Charente, during the 19th century. The impression of moss, in turn, is a result of the patina on what is called the “bavette”.

The “bavette” is the green glaze drip applied to the front to prevent the incrustation of thick walnut oil spills. Naturally, the most solicited areas during filling and pouring were the filling hole and the pouring spout.

Let’s remember that walnut oil was historically used as fuel to illuminate streets and households until the advent of the “Electricity Fairy.”
